Eighty Percent of Petitions Are Reasonable, Say Chinese Authorities – Bai Dehua

From China Times, summarized and translated by CDT:

Among numerous group petitions and repetitive petitions in Urumqi, the capital city of Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, 80 percent were reasonable and legitimate, said Li Zhi, CCP Secretary General of Urumqi.

In recent years, over half of the petitions in Urumqi were about demolition and relocation. Those kinds of petitions were mostly triggered by the delay in relocation compensation, which was itself caused by mismanagement in a few government bureaus.

Mr. Li Zhi demanded that the related government bureaus take action as soon as they receive petitions and that they visit the petitioners immediately. The officials should deal with different situations with different approaches, said Mr. Li Zhi.

Mr. Li Zhi gave his speech at a government meeting, according to China Youth Daily. Li also asked government officials at different levels to be concerned with the well-being of the masses and to take good care of people.

The nailhouse event in Chongqing galvanized people in China to petition against the injustice of the demolition and relocation.
