China to Amend Law to help Lawyers Obtain Evidence, Open Individual Law Firms – Xinhua

China’s top legislature on Sunday started examining a draft amendment to the Law on Lawyers which aims to tighten deontology in the legal profession, make it easier for lawyers to meet criminal suspects and obtain evidence, and also authorizes lawyers to open individual law firms.

The draft amendment to the Law on Lawyers was submitted Sunday to the six-day 28th session of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), or China’s legislature.

Chinese attorneys have long complained of difficulties in meeting criminal suspects and looking up files and obtaining evidences when they defend criminal cases. [Full Text]
