Bloomberg Seeks Less Info Control in China – Christopher Bodeen

Information controls are a barrier to social progress and innovation, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a speech Monday in China, whose communist leaders maintain a firm grip on all media. Bloomberg , founder of the financial news business that bears his name, also called on China to rein in pirating of products from movies to medicine.

Those comments reflect increasing pressure from U.S. officials for action from China against violations of intellectual property rights they say hurt both exporters to the country and China’s own ability to produce innovation. Attempts to control information online or in more traditional forms will “undermine progress,” Bloomberg told a conference on innovation in the Chinese capital. [Full Text]
