“Us Chinese” and “Us Chinese People”

Xu_Xing Beijing based writer Xu Xing wrote following post on his Xintianyou blog, thanks to M. J.’s translation:

Whenever I hear these words, I feel them grate upon my ears. Especially when I hear them from major talk show hosts of CCTV; anyway I look at it, they sound more and more like emcees from the late Qing dynasty. I can see them already – those broad-shouldered “heroes” stripped to the waist, feet planted aground in the shape of a “T,” with a six-inch wide waistband and a thumb sticking out behind them, selling their arts on the street.

If in Germany a show host were to use these words, he’d definitely lose his job. On second thought, what other country’s show host would say these words? Who would dare to do so?

Furthermore, your China is not my China, and your Chinese people are not my Chinese people. My China is also not your China, and my Chinese people not your Chinese people. What right do you have in declaring “us, us” every other word? Just because you’re on CCTV, you think you’re the man? You think that you can represent me?
