China: ‘Suspicious Liquids’ Used in Plane Crash Attempt

China SouthernFollowing recent reports of a foiled attempt to crash a China Southern Airlines flight out of Urumqi, Chinese media are now saying the suspects (still unidentified) had planned to use flammable liquids to create the disaster. From AFP:

Shanghai’s Oriental Morning Post reported that the substances in question were believed to have been flammable.

“According to sources, flammable substances were found in the toilet of the plane. At least two passengers have been detained for questioning,” it said, without specifying its sources.

Nur Bekri, the chairman of the Xinjiang regional government who spoke on Sunday, told reporters on the sidelines of the annual session of congress that the flight diverted to Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province, because “some people were attempting to create an air disaster.”

The International Herald Tribune, meanwhile, quotes an anonymous source “with information about the incident” as saying a Uighur woman had somehow smuggled three containers of gasoline onto the plane, which she had taken into one of the bathrooms before being captured by crew members.
