Emboldened China Won’t Be Bullied by the West Any More

From Sydney Morning Herald:

It’s been bubbling beneath the surface for months. But while rumours of a Chinese raid on BHP have previously been dismissed, yesterday they were being treated seriously on the upper levels at 180 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.

Rumours have to be expected in a takeover bid as protracted as BHP’s massive tilt at Rio Tinto, as both sides try to win the upper hand in the propaganda war.

In fact, the other big rumour yesterday was that BHP was ready to raise its offer, adding some cash. While there is no truth to that one – at least not yet – there appears to be a fair amount of consternation about China and rumoured plans to buy up to 10 per cent of the Big Australian.
