When many of the biggest names in global telephony gathered in Hong Kong last month for the annual meeting of the UN’s International Telecommunication Union, Chinese regulators had the perfect stage from which to lay out their vision for third generation wireless services.
But the ministers attending the first ITU Telecom World conference and exhibition to be held in Asia instead carefully maintained the inscrutable ambiguity that has long clouded the 3G plans of the world’s biggest mobile market.
For all the official opacity, however, many in the telecoms equipment industry believe Beijing will soon be ready to issue 3G licences, clearing the way for billions of dollars in spending on equipment for new national wireless networks[Full Text].
