Eco-Warrior Faces Jail Term in China – Saibal Dasgupta

Wu Lihong, a Chinese environmentalist who shook the bureaucracy in the prosperous south China province of Jiangsu is being prosecuted for blackmailing industries. He has been accused by Yixing city administration of extorting $6,875 by threatening companies to expose their activities resulting in environmental pollution.

Wu, once nominated as one of the top 10 environmentalist by a panel of judges from the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and National People’s Congress , was arrested in April on charges of blackmailing industrialists, it has been revealed.The environmental administration of Jiangsu had recommended him for national honours for his advocacy work in 2005 and hailed him as a eco-warrior who spent 16 years and his own money to investigate factories contaminating the environment.
