Mongolia’s relations with China have improved since the 1994 Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, though the influx of Chinese migrant workers often undermines Mongolian labor laws. The Dalai Lama’s visits to Mongolia have also caused political tensions between the countries.
China continues to be Mongolia’s largest economic partner. Notably, China plans to extract coal, in addition to other natural resources, from Mongolia’s extensive reserves.
As China expands into Mongolia, India is also attempting to enhance its military ties with Mongolia to monitor the Chinese military buildup.
