Six more former officials involved in the massive Shanghai pension fund scandal were pronounced guilty on September 25. Qin Yu, former chief of Shanghai’s Baoshan District and a major aide of former Shanghai party boss Chen Liangyu, was ruled life imprisonment by an intermediate court in Jilin Province. Sun Luyi, former deputy secretary of Shanghai Municipal Communist Party Committee, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Both men were convicted of abuse of power and accepting bribes.
Qin Yu was first under official investigation on August 24, 2006, when the state news agency Xinhua reported that “related government departments discovered in the case of misuse of pension funds by the Shanghai Municipal Labor and Social Security Bureau” and Qin Yu was allegedly conducing unlawful practices.
