Today the Beijing Modern Dance Company will be making its first performance of “Rear Light,” a modern dance piece to the music of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall,” at the Joyce Theater in New York. The article states that modern dance has become a medium of individual expression in a country in which censorship is rampant. Choreographer Willy Tsao is quoted, “Dancers are not afraid to say that they are not satisfied, and they say it through the body.” The stage for “Rear Light” is set with “the sight of young people placed “up against the wall” and of crime-scene body silhouettes painted on the floor,” and is filled with dancing that is “turbulent and regimented,” perhaps representing the persecution of the Tiananmen Demonstraters who were brutally crushed in 1989 by the Chinese government.
