Killion: China in the Spotlight – and Under Microscope

From the MercuryNews.com:

If the Olympic Games have really passed their expiration date, someone forgot to tell one-fifth of the world.

Because these Olympics are going to matter. Perhaps more than any in history.

There is a popular argument, debated in the sports world and other circles, that the Olympics are passé. Obsolete. A relic of a simpler, more idealistic past. That the modern Games have been ruined by the three Cs: corruption, cheating and commercialism.

The three Cs are about to meet the fourth C – China. And no matter what you feel – excitement, anger, apathy – about this month’s Olympic Games, there is no denying that they are absolutely a watershed moment.

The Beijing Olympics promise to be a merging of culture, politics, economy, sport, art and ideas. A singular moment in time for the world’s largest nation. A well-orchestrated extravaganza that China is determined to pull off without a hitch.

And the rest of the world will be watching to see if such a feat is actually possible.
