The Group of Seven powers appealed for currency flexibility today in their latest veiled rebuke to China.
Finance ministers from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States did not explicitly cite China in a statement on currency rates issued at their latest meeting in Washington. But US Treasury Secretary John Snow made clear the disquiet felt about the peg linking China’s yuan to the US dollar.
“It’s time (for the Chinese) to take the next step and move to flexibility,” he told reporters after the talks.
