Fang Jing, host of the CCTV military program Defense Watch, was accused of being a spy for Taiwan. Fang has denied the allegations. From Financial Times:
Fang Jing, a 38-year-old veteran of China Central Television, denied the allegations from The China Daily, the English-language mouthpiece of the Chinese government, including suggestions that she had been seduced by a Taiwanese man eight years her junior.
[…] In China, suspects in important cases are often kept under a form of house arrest while investigations are ongoing and not formally arrested or charged until much later.
The news comes one month after a former senior official from Xinhua, China’s official news service, was sentenced to 18 years in prison for selling state secrets to South Korea and Japan.
Both incidents illustrate the special role of journalists in China, which makes them privy to information but does not expect them to report it unless under mandate from Communist party propaganda officials. Journalists are also required to file regular internal reports that are read only by senior party leaders.
