Online Chinese forum blocks rural democracy, migrant worker debates – Interfax

From Interfax:

A well-known Chinese BBS (bulletin board system) has decided to put an stop to heated public discussions about grassroots democracy in a southern Chinese village and the brutal murder of four people by a migrant worker in Ningxia.

The Yannan Community posted an official announcement on Wednesday September 21, urging all forum administrators to delete articles relating to the two sensitive topics on the BBS site. The BBS, frequented by Chinese academics, thinkers and critics, is famous for its open topics and heated debates.

The first batch of posts centered on a widely reported incident in which several hundreds of farmers in the small village of Taishi signed a petition to remove the village chief and organize a legal election. The case has been regarded as a milestone in China’s rural democracy movement.
