A copy of an internal New York Times memo is all Beijing can use to indict a detained Chinese researcher, according to a confidential document of the Chinese State Security Ministry.
Researcher Zhao Yan has been held for over a year on suspicion of revealing state secrets to the American daily.
State security agents obtained a copy of the memo as part of an investigation to uncover the source of a Times article predicting the retirement of China’s former president Jiang Zemin, people familiar with the probe said.
Mr Zhao wrote the memo in July last year. It described a possible leadership dispute over military promotions.
It is unclear how the agents got hold of it. The Times’ foreign editor Susan Chira said the paper did not give the government a copy of the memo…
