Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau received reports via its 110 emergency number of 1,265 cases of fraud committed via short messaging service (SMS) during the National Day holidays from September 30 to October 7. Dozens of handset users were deceived and the biggest reported loss was RMB 310,000 (USD 38,414).
“There was an outbreak of fraudulent short messages in Beijing during National Day holidays,” said the bureau in a statement at www.legalinfo.gov.cn, run by China’s Ministry of Justice. On October 2, 88 cases were reported to the bureau. A handset user surnamed Zhao was the biggest sufferer, who was cheated into transferring RMB 310,000 (USD 38,414) to another bank account. The reported smallest loss was several thousand Chinese Yuan.
The fraudulent text messages told the handset user that they had spent a certain amount of money in shopping malls, and left a phone number for inquiries. When the user called, a fraudster posing as a bank official asked the user for his bank card number and password.
