JUST 15 years ago fishing boats used to ply the river here but now locals call this section of the Weihe River the ‘sewer.’
“If it didn’t rain the water was red and it stank,” said 53-year-old grandmother Lao Wang, a villager in Qishan County in northwestern China’s Shaanxi Province as she and her daughter took advantage of a recent downpour to wash clothes in one of the Weihe’s tributaries.
The Weihe River is one of the most polluted in China and inspectors from the central government recently toured here to check up on the massive clean-up that’s been underway the past couple of years. [Full Text]
