CHINA plans to spend 1.4 trillion yuan (US$175 billion) on environmental protection during the nation’s 11th Five-Year Plan period, which will account for more than 1.5 percent of the GDP in the period, Xinhua news agency said today.
A total of 180 billion yuan will be invested into building waste water treatment projects in the cities and towns alongside the country’s 10 main water systems, said He Bingguang, vice minister from the National Development and Reform Commission.
“These projects are designed to dispose of 40 million tons of human waste water per day,” said He. “Another 200 billion yuan will be placed into projects for the waste water produced by these industries.” [Full Text]
For comparison, the total funding requested for “high priority environment and natural resource programs” by the Bush Administration in its 2005 budget was $46.9 billion.
