Kerry ‘accuses Beijing of blocking HK’s democratic aspirations’

Although China has rarely been mentioned in the US presidential campaign, candidate John Kerry gave an interview to Hong Kong’s Singtao Daily, in which he condemned China’s crackdown on democracy in Hong Kong, and promised to raise the issue with Chinese leaders if elected on Tuesday: “Beijing hasn’t completely fulfilled the autonomy and political rights guaranteed to Hong Kong by its mini-constitution, Mr Kerry said in comments translated in the Chinese-language daily newspaper… Mr Kerry also said that if China doesn’t respect Hong Kong’s guaranteed rights, it sends a negative message to Taiwan, ” according to a report in the South China Morning Post (reg required).
