I don’t know what I expected. Maybe a white room with a waiting area where I could sip tea while someone serviced my ThinkPad. What I didn’t expect was a small apartment reminiscent of my freshman dorm filled with chain-smoking Chinese men. The tables were strewn with a Frankenstein’s workshop worth of spare parts and strange machines that looked like torture devices from a dystopian future. A hollow monitor served as an ashtray. Everyone was staring reverently at one guy who was hunched over what had once been a laptop. A cigarette dangled precariously from the corner of his mouth. This was Li Jintao, senior engineer at the Character Quality Brand Computer Maintenance Center and my personal savior.
