Tibet Was, Is, And Always Will Be A Part of China?

Chinese netizens have been attacking Western media coverage of the Tibet riots. Having received propaganda education for years, many believe that sloppiness or ignorance by the western media is in fact a conscious campaign to distort the facts, and that CCTV reports on the violence in Lhasa represent the whole truth. Here is an example on Youtube:

Eastwestsouthnorth also has a post on this topic: China puts out its Tibet version .

Recently, my friends in China have debated with me about the Tibet riots and most of them are eager to express their belief that Tibet belongs to China. Chinese overseas students also posted a slideshow to support their belief that Tibet was, is and always will be a part of China to counter demands for Tibetan independence.

Xinhua has also published a backgrounder on the official view of Tibet’s history. See also a Washington Post report, “Protests May Only Harden Chinese Line.

For a different perspective on Tibet from a Han Chinese who has spent a lot of time there, read Tibet: Her Pain, My Shame, by filmmaker Tang Danhong.

  • I’m not sure that you are being fair to the creators of these clips.
“Having received propaganda education for years, many believe that sloppiness or ignorance by the western media is in fact a conscious campaign to distort the facts, and that CCTV reports on the violence in Lhasa represent the whole truth.”
The first assertion, about the distortion of facts by the western media, is something that the first clip does a good job of supporting. Putting a caption on a photo of an ambulance claiming a heavy military presence - who could be so stupid?

As for your second assertion - that they beleive everything that CCTV tells them - where is that claim made by either of the two video clips. Perhaps face-to-face some people have said that, but we can’t assign that belief to the makers of the videos without proof.

Both of these videos are making very valid claims, even if we don’t fully agree with them. I think that that really needs to be better acknowledged.

  • Also, this Voice of America article supports the comments in the first video about the photos of Nepal police violence being attributed to Chinese police.
