Young Chinese are experiencing a revolution in their ideas and practices of sex, but the sex education lags behind in China. According to a study by Shanghai No. 2 Medical University. 29.4 percent of local high school students have started dating. About 3.5 percent have had some sexual experiences. While another survey conducted by the Chinese Youth and Children Research Center, involved a total number of 5,000 college students across the country showed that only 6.6 percent of the participants had received scientific and thorough sex education at college, with 36 percent had received no sex education in college at all.
Some sex education programs have been experimented in some school, which are generally favored by the students. However, the number of such pioneer schools are very limited, partly because talking of sex publicly is still regarded as embarrassing for a lot of Chinese people. The young Chinese people are also not likely to get formal sex education from their family since their parents themselves are lack of such knowledge or reluctant to talk about it.
The Internet has become an important source for the Chinese youth to get information and informal eduction of sex. Some of the college students in the survey state that they get knowlege about sex from the online pornography. In Shanghai, a special website for sex education was set up by the city’s Institute of Planned Parenthood Research (SIPPR) for the students to learn about sex.
