Officials criticized for response to sub

From the Asahi Shimbun: “The chase continued Thursday night of a suspected Chinese submarine that had entered Japanese waters, as government officials came under fire for their delayed response to the intrusion.

Maritime Self-Defense Force aircraft and ships were tracking the vessel that was spotted in Okinawa Prefecture on Wednesday.

Government sources said the submarine had traveled north-northeast in waters southwest of Okinawa after leaving Japanese territorial waters. The submarine changed its course to a more westerly direction and appeared headed for China.

While the government did not officially state the national origin of the submarine, many officials voiced suspicions it was a Han-class submarine from China based on the sound of the propellers. ”
