Chris Buckley: Chen hints at a softer approach to Beijing

From The International Herald Tribune:

Taiwan’s president, Chen Shui-bian, issued a joint declaration with a leading opposition politician on Thursday that sought to heal divisions over Taiwan’s future and held open the possibility of reconciliation with the Chinese mainland.

The declaration included 10 points of agreement between Chen, a member of the Democratic Progressive Party, which favors asserting Taiwan’s independence, and James Soong, the chairman of the opposition People’s First Party and an advocate of closer relations with China.
