Japan is taking over a lighthouse built by right-wing activists years ago on a small island in the East China Sea, a move that has drawn fire from China, which also claims sovereignty over the uninhabited isle.
Despite growing economic interdependence, ties have been chilled by Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s visits to a Tokyo shrine which honors war criminals along with other war dead. Territorial disputes and a Chinese nuclear submarine’s intrusion into Japanese waters in November are other irritants.
