China’s surging energy demand is compounding the challenge of reducing horrific coal mine disasters, even as social pressures are bringing change, a senior U.S. mine safety official said on Friday.

John Correll, a deputy assistant labor secretary, commiserated with Chinese counterparts to improve mine safety as they reeled from deadly blasts that make China the most dangerous place to mine on earth.
