The United States has urged China to account for thousands of citizens who were killed, detained or disappeared during the “brutal and tragic” Tiananmen Square crackdown.
The Chinese authorities tightened security over the weekend and there were no signs of public commemorations in the giant square, where the student-led protests ended on 4 June, 1989, when soldiers and tanks attacked, killing hundreds of people.
In Washington, a US State Department spokesman said that 16 years after the “brutal and tragic events,” as many as 250 Chinese still languish in prison for Tiananmen-related activities.
