Leading economists do not hesitate to give frank advice to China about reforming its economic policies and institutions.
A generation ago, this would have been dismissed by many China watchers as both ideologically motivated and pointless. Now, it is routine and, as China wrestles with the enormous challenges of reshaping its economy, such advice is increasingly heeded by its policymakers.
This is markedly less so regarding advice on political reform, but frank and vigorous dialogue is just as necessary in that domain.
