Beijing pressed on ‘abuse’ of blind activist – Andrew Yeh

From the Financial Times:

A US expert on the Chinese criminal justice system has called on Beijing to demonstrate its commitment to the rule of law by intervening in the high-profile case of a blind activist confined, harassed and allegedly beaten by authorities in northern Shandong province.

Chen Guangcheng, a legal activist who had been campaigning against alleged abuses by family planning officials, was taken from a Beijing street in September and has since been confined to his home in Shandong’s Linyi city. Supporters said last month that Mr Chen had been beaten when he tried to meet visiting lawyers, who were also attacked.

The Ministry of Public Security had failed to act despite increasingly visible and frequent violations of the law by police in Linyi, said Jerome Cohen, a veteran scholar and professor at New York University School of Law.
