China’s international standing is almost as bad as it was after Tiananmen Square, a leading human rights monitor has warned.
Following media crackdowns and the virtual end of early release for political prisoners, John Kamm, one of a few human rights monitors whom Beijing deals with, yesterday called on President Hu Jintao to sack the party propaganda chiefs.
Mr Kamm said they had “presided over the biggest drop in China’s international image since Tiananmen”, a reference to the bloody crackdown on democracy protests in 1989.
