China’s Hu outlines fence-mending visit to Japan – embassy official – Forbes

President Hu Jintao wants to pay his first official visit to Japan in the hope of repairing ties between the two countries, diplomatic officials said.

It was the first time Hu has expressed interest in a visit to Japan since he took power in 2002, the embassy official added. Hu and Koizumi have not met since April 2005. Relations between the two countries have been damaged by an ongoing dispute over contested energy reserves and repeated visits by Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to a war shrine honouring war criminals.
