A food company from Taiwan, the self-governing island threatened with invasion if it declares formal independence from China, was on Wednesday named as the exclusive supplier of instant noodles to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Uni-President, the island’s biggest food company, is the first Taiwanese-owned company to be named as a sponsor of the games, although Taiwanese companies have invested $150bn in mainland China, in spite of the military and diplomatic tensions across the Taiwan strait.
But it became clear immediately that the deal will also be used by the mainland as propaganda in its campaign for re-unification with the island, which has run its own affairs since nationalist forces fled there after losing the Chinese civil war to the Communists in 1949.[Full Text]
