Two ways to fight corruption – Wei Jing Sheng

In the International Herald Tribune, democracy activist Wei Jingsheng writes:

Those who are concerned about the Chinese democracy movement should pay close attention to ongoing events in Taiwan, especially the popular anticorruption campaign that has emerged there in recent weeks.

The very existence of Taiwan’s political and economic openness offers a sharp challenge to China’s leadership. The worry is that its own public may look at Taiwan’s path to democracy as a model for China itself, which could lead to the end of Communist Party rule.

The recent anticorruption movement in Taiwan is a perfect example of the challenge that China fears. The purpose of this citizen movement is to protect Taiwan’s hard-won democracy by holding political leaders accountable for their conduct. [Full text]
