A small shack, roughly built on the corner of a road in Shanghai, is surrounded by high-rise developments. Owned by a tough old woman, it is patronized by night-time drivers.
This is the most famous “nail household” (ÈíâÂ≠êÊà∑Ôºâof Shanghai on Wuding Road of Jing’an district. The shop owner enjoys her small business and she doesn’t want to move. She once protested the governmental forced-relocation by pouring gasoline on herself. Then the government backed off and even the police didn’t dare to get closer to the house. A real estate developer once promised her a big apartment plus 2 million yuan ($250,000) for her shop but she refused it and asked to double the offer. In the last conflict between her and the government, both an ambulance and the police showed up to help. [Chinese post here]
