China must meet its international human rights obligations, French presidential candidate Segolene Royal said Sunday on a trip to China where she hopes to bolster her foreign-policy credentials.

Royal said China had to stop jailing lawyers and journalists, especially as it had signed international human rights agreements.

…In the past year, China has cracked down on lawyers who represent farmers, laid-off workers and others with official grievances. Activist lawyers have been jailed, harassed and stripped of their law licenses.
