America often condemns China’s human rights record, most recently with the State Department annual human rights report. Recently, China published the 2006 American Human Rights Report as a response to and criticism of America. From the Washington Post:
The report took aim at a variety of issues, including civilian deaths in Iraq, child poverty, racism, mistreatment of prisoners and the place of U.S. women in the workplace.
It said naming and shaming other countries in an annual report on human rights practices amounted to waging the Cold War of the second half of the 20th century and was “typical of Cold War mentality.” [Full text]
The Chinese version highlights:
The Iraq War: The war has caused 655, 000 Iraqi people’s death.
Poverty: There are 600, 000 homeless people in the USA.
Discrimination: The jobless rate for blacks is twice as high as that for the whites in the USA, etc.
