From China Daily:

On Green China Day over 10,000 people helped plant over 5,000 trees in order to help curb deforestation and land degradation, which is part of a 1981 government policy that requires people between the ages of 11 to 55 to plant three to five trees every year. Green China Day was created to help counter the lack of participation, since the State Forestry Administration only shows that 55% of people actual plant trees.

However, China has still managed to increase it’s forest coverage from 12% in 1981 to 18.21% now, although they are still 66% of the international average. [Full Text]
