A tragedy-turned violence. A Hunan hospital not only mistreated a baby, but also hired thugs to beat up the family and relatives. Translated from People’s Daily Online (photo: hospital rounded up by crowd and police) via sina.com:
Duan Tangxian (ÊƵ†ÇË¥§), a leather bag vendor in Chenzhou City (ÈÉ¥Â∑ûÂ∏Ç) of Hunan Province, ran into a nearby hospital, by the name of Fukang (Á¶èÂ∫∑ÂåªÈô¢ or Blessing and Health), when his one-year-old boy was running a fever and refused to eat in the early morning of July 15. The baby was “diagnosed” as having a cold, and was given an intravenous drip.
In midÔºçafternoon, Duan didn’t find his baby getting better and returned to the same hospital, where a medication was prescribed. The next morning, nothing looked better. Duan went to the hospital again, and a doctor gave an intravenous drip again. Again, it didn’t work and Duan had to return to another doctor, who figured the baby was really sick but refused to see his patient. Duan was suggested to go to the city’s Children’s Hospital.
In late afternoon, Duan had to leave Fukang and hire a motorcycle cab to run to another hospital, with his baby still running a high fever but feeling cold on his body. Halfway there, the boy’s mouth started bleeding. The baby arrived at the hospital but it was too late. The doctor there failed to save him.
Angered by the neglectful hospital, Duan and his family started negotiation with the hospital for compensation. The hospital started with an offer of 2,000 yuan but eventually agreed to go as high as 80,000 yuan. But it didn’t pay, until the baby’s family and relatives put up a banner “seeking justice” outside the facade of the hospital and placed their boy’s body in the lobby.
While a crowd gathered in the early morning a few days later, over 100 young people with steel clubs flooded into the lobby and descended upon the few grieving family, injuring five and knocking down Duan’s mother, putting her in a coma. Soon police came and arrested many of the violent gang, along with hospital officials. [Full Text in Chinese]
