In mid July, a post online flamed up a nationwide controversy over an alleged playboy vice mayor Tong Waiyuan (童外元) of Gejiu City (个旧市) in Yunnan Province. As early August wound up, as many were still debating the truthfulness of the online expose, Gejiu fired its vice mayor and an investigation over economic crimes may also be underway for the womanizer official.
It started with an incoming email to Jiang Huanwen (ÂßúÁÑïÊñá), a Shenyang, Liaoning-based “number one professional whistle-blower.” The note came from “Du Sober (ÊùúÈÜíÊÇü),” who said she was a mistress of a vice mayor in Yunnan. She complained about being verbally humiliated and beaten by the man, and she couldn’t find another way to get her petition heard.
Jiang, the expose professional, talked to his client over the phone and got digital photos and other materials about the woman’s affair with the local official. The woman is an owner of two businesses and got acquainted with the vice mayor through business and struck up an affair in 2004. She got pregnant twice, with the official, who insisted on abortions in both cases. Soon the affair cooled down, and Du found her man had multiple relationships.
Du also alleged that Tang, the vice mayor, beat her up in front of her home. Du called 911 (119 in China) and was hospitalized. Tang soon visited her and put down 50,000 yuan for medical bills. The beating was confirmed by the local police.
Jiang, the investigator, also made a trip down to Yunnan to meet his client and made calls to the vice mayor to confirm the affair, which was neither affirmed nor denied. The vice mayor advised him not to believe things on the Internet. A local official confirmed that the vice mayor was fired and Jiang also learned another investigation, over economic crimes, is also underway related to the fired official. [Full Text in Chinese]
