New Year Crisis Hits China

From The Financial Times:

Chinese authorities were on Tuesday scrambling to resolve a crisis in transport and power systems that has left millions of travellers stranded, closed scores of factories and is threatening to inflict severe damage on the economy.

The crisis, brought on by the combination of the worst snow falls in half a century and power cuts caused by coal shortages, has coincided with China’s peak travel season, the lunar new year.

About 77m people have been affected by the disaster, which has shut big airports and paralysed train services in many of the most populous parts.
