“Runner Fan” Prompts Change in Teachers’ Ethics Regulation

Xinhua has reported on new ethics regulations that will be implemented following the controversial case of so-called Runner Fan, a teacher who fled his classroom before his during the Wenchuan earthquake:

A draft of the new State ethics for primary and secondary school teachers says for the first that protecting students is the moral responsibility of a teacher.

Education officials have placed “protecting students’ ” under the third clause of the first revision to the regulation that came into being in 1997.

The revision, online for scrutiny till July 30, reduces the existing regulation from eight to six clauses and says teachers should “be good mentors and helpful friends”.
