U.S. Election: What Are the Chinese Paying Attention To?

The Global Times, the tabloid sister of the People’s Daily that focuses on international news and analysis, discusses the significance of US elections to Chinese people and makes the case that Chinese elites go Democratic. This argument is interesting in light of the fact that the CCP is thought to favor the Republican Party (due to its tendency towards less restrictive trade and its blind eye to human rights violations). The author’s evidence that Chinese go for the Democratic Party includes a mock election held by the US Embassy in Beijing in 2000 in which a majority (70%) of the 2,000 participants cast a vote for the Gore-Lieberman ticket. He also cites a media poll in 2004 in which a majority of Chinese people were leaning Democratic.
