Hexie Farm (蟹农场): Blowin’ in the Wind (Updated)

For the latest installment in his CDT series, cartoonist Crazy Crab of Hexie Farm honors the Tibetans who have self-immolated in protest against Beijing’s policies in Tibet. As many as 59 Tibetans have set themselves on fire since 2009, and 47 have died, according to Tibetan writer Woeser, including Saturday’s death of a 27-year-old inside a Buddhist monastery in Gansu (other media have recorded slightly different numbers of self-immolators). The cartoon portrays a ball of fire whose speech bubble is made out of burned-out matches. In drawing the cartoon, Crazy Crab says he was inspired by Bob Dylan’s lyrics from Blowing in the Wind:

Yes, how many deaths will it take till he knows

That too many people have died ?
