People’s Daily reports on the ecological and social challenges facing China now that the population has reached 1.3 billion: “Meanwhile 1.3 million is also a number that causes anxiety, problems such as consumption, education, employment and housing coming along with 1.3 million populations. No matter how big a cake is, it will be divided into fairly small portions when considering 1.3 billion populations as the denominator. The shortage of once badly needed resources such as water, arable land and forest will be more and more intense, the ‘vast territory and abundant resources’ turning out be ‘vast territory and scarce resource’.”
