The demand for live-in maids has soared in recent years among the newly affluent middle classes in China’s booming eastern and southern cities, leading to a severe shortage of household help. The lack of domestic servants becomes acute during the two-week Spring Festival. Most maids are from rural provinces and the Spring Festival, which is China’s biggest public holiday, is the only time of the year they get to see their families.
China’s roads, railways, rivers and airports are bracing themselves for the two billion journeys that will be made during the holiday period, the largest annual migration of people anywhere in the world.
