Despite political tensions betweenTaiwan and China, China Post reports the island today plans to welcome an unprecedented number of tourists from the mainland.
Nearly 700 Chinese tourists are expected to visit Taiwan today aboard the Rhapsody of the Sea, now the largest ocean liner in Asia, making them the biggest Chinese tourist group ever to be allowed to visit Taiwan, according to a local press report.
The group’s visit will generate over $300,000 for Taiwan, but officials are worried about possible defections.
The two Taiwan travel agencies authorized to sponsor the visits face a fine of NT$200,000 (US$6,211) for each Chinese tourist who runs away.
