Who protests in China? “Only losers and crazies,” one woman says. Are protests allowed during Olympics? “No.” From Telegraph blogs:
A Chinese woman I knew once said to me that only losers and crazies tried to take on the government here, such as by organising protests, petitions or becoming activists in some way. She didn’t put it quite as bluntly as that, but almost.
At the time, I thought this was rather heartless. It reminded me of Thatcherite yuppies in the eighties who sneered at student radicals for being priggishly concerned with externals such as apartheid, inequality, the environment and the like rather than getting on with the fun of rebuilding a capitalist Britain.
I soon came to realise that it was a classically double- or triple-edged Chinese comment.
