According to the Xinhua News Agency, President Hu Jintao of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) stated March 4 that the purpose of the “anti-nation-splitting” draft law presently before the PRC National People’s Congress (NPC) is to dissuade anyone from pushing Taiwan toward “formal independence.” This avowed purpose defies historical fact, straightforward logic and political wisdom.
Independence from what? Regrettably, the answer always given by Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leaders and echoed by a compliant international media is: independence from an entity called “one China,” without critical examination of what the term means.
