Suicide of Probed Food Regulator Reported

Caijing magazine reports that Wu Jianping, who was in charge of regulating food safety, committed suicide after meeting with party discipline officials:

Wu Jianping, 42, had headed the Department of Supervision on Food Production at the State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine since 2005.

Communist Party discipline officials launched a probe after receiving several reports accusing Wu of “personal financial problems.”

Sources told Caijing that Wu had acknowledged to disciplinary officers that he held several real estate assets in Beijing and bank deposits of more than 1 million yuan.

The night after the meeting, Wu did not return home. Sources close to Wu said he committed suicide by jumping from a building, although it’s not known where the death occurred nor whether discipline officials were present.

Yet officials are claiming his death was accidental, according to this AP report:

A spokeswoman for the agency said Wu Jianping died after falling from a building in an accident on Aug. 2. She denied a media report that the 42-year-old official committed suicide after a meeting with investigators about his financial problems.

“His incident was an accident. He fell from a building,” said Xia Wenjun of the news department of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

The spokeswoman refused to elaborate, saying she had no more information to provide.
